Findings to Be Shared Through a CME/CE-Certified Webcast, Peer-Reviewed Article, and Online Resource Center

(Washington, D.C., November 9, 2020) – Global Liver Institute (GLI), Albert Einstein College of Medicine-Montefiore Medical Center, Center for Continuing Professional Development (Einstein-Montefiore), and Integritas Communications (Integritas) have received an educational grant from Pfizer, Inc., to execute the 2021 Nonalcoholic Steatohepatitis (NASH) Diagnostics Forum™. The initiative, titled “A Critical Appraisal of Noninvasive Technologies in NASH: Informing the Future of NASH Diagnosis and Assessment,” will convene a multidisciplinary panel of experts to conduct a comprehensive analysis of available data on noninvasive biomarkers and tools for diagnosis, prognosis, and monitoring of NASH, the advanced form of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). The grant will also support dissemination of the Forum’s findings to the broader medical community via multiple media.

Eight international NASH experts from the fields of hepatology and endocrinology will convene in the first quarter of 2021 to analyze key scientific information related to advancements and current best practices surrounding the diagnosis of NASH. GLI, Einstein-Montefiore, and Integritas will develop a short-segment continuing medical education webcast highlighting the key goals, findings, and output of the NASH Diagnostics Forum™. The webcast will be disseminated via the Reach MD network to a broad national and international audience of hepatology, gastroenterology, and endocrinology specialists, and other clinicians who treat patients with, or at risk of, NASH. Additionally, the educational partners will conduct a field survey to determine the clinical practice patterns and opinions of specialists involved in the care of patients with NASH for comparison with the evidence-based findings and recommendations of the Forum panel. The initiative’s full findings will be compiled for inclusion in a peer-reviewed publication in the third quarter of 2021.

“Comprehensive, global engagement is imperative to expanding the adoption of noninvasive diagnostics for liver disease and helping us move ‘beyond the biopsy,’” stated Donna Cryer, JD, president and CEO of GLI. “We’re grateful to have the opportunity to convene international NASH experts and share our findings with clinicians, patient advocates, and the full NASH community. Noninvasive tools, such as blood tests and imaging, are key to scaling safe, effective methods for diagnosis, monitoring, and improving the health of the 148 million people with NASH worldwide and those at high risk, such as people living with obesity or type 2 diabetes. We’ll continue to advocate for the development and use of these essential tools through our Beyond the Biopsy initiative, the GLI NASH Council, and International NASH Day on June 10, 2021.”

“This initiative fits into our current scope of work, delivering activities that improve clinicians’ knowledge, skills, strategies, clinical performance, and patient outcomes. We collaborate with our healthcare professionals to develop interprofessional education that improves patient care,” notes Victor Hatcher, PhD, Associate Dean of Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Albert Einstein College of Medicine-Montefiore Medical Center offers continuing education credit for dentistry, medicine, nursing, optometry, pharmacy, physician assistants, psychology, and social work.

“As an educational provider, it is this type of initiative that we—and our contributing faculty members—find most meaningful and impactful. Our program design allows for an in-depth appraisal of evidence and provides a means to identify gaps in clinical practice relative to evidence-based recommendations,” shares Becky Carney, Sr. Vice President of Educational Strategy at Integritas Communications.
