“I am honored to join the CMSS Board of Directors as a Public Member and to give voice to the patient perspective on health care,” stated Cryer. “Having personally received a liver transplant 26 years ago, I founded GLI as a way for patient advocates to collaboratively work with physicians, government officials, and industry to redesign the health ecosystem to work better for liver patients. I look forward to engaging with CMSS members, sharing patient concerns and priorities, and increasing the awareness of liver diseases across specialties.”

Cryer has channeled her lived experience as a patient into professional advocacy through an extensive career in law, policy, consulting, public relations, clinical trial recruitment, and nonprofit management. She is a frequent speaker on the topic of patient-centeredness and patient engagement in healthcare transformation, including at the 2020 CMSS Virtual Annual Meeting in October where she was pleased to give a plenary presentation underscoring the patient voice on the digital transformation of healthcare, education, and research.

Helen Burstin, MD, MPH, MACP, CEO of CMSS, stated, “Donna brings unique experience and perspective to the CMSS Board, both as a patient herself and her leadership of a patient-driven non-profit organization. Her broad experience in healthcare, research and advocacy across multiple specialties on a national and international level will be a huge asset to our board.”

“From primary care to surgery, our diverse members come together to proactively address critical issues for physicians and patients, making the patient perspective an essential part of our cross-specialty conversations. With Donna on our Board, we will be able to discuss priorities in an even more comprehensive way, especially as telehealth services expand,” added Darilyn V. Moyer, MD, FACP, FRCP, FIDSA, executive vice president and CEO of the American College of Physicians and President of the CMSS Board of Directors.

Cryer currently serves on the Board of Directors for Sibley Memorial Hospital/Johns Hopkins Medicine, the Innovation and Value Initiative, and the Executive Committee of the Clinical Trials Transformation Initiative. She received an undergraduate degree from Harvard/Radcliffe Colleges and a Juris Doctorate from the Georgetown University Law Center.
